In their book, Fired Up!, Michael Gill and Sheila Paterson provide a straight forward how-to book for anyone who has ever thought about being their own boss. Both authors left successful corporate jobs to become even more successful, and much more fulfilled, as entrepreneurs. They provide strategies to help anyone increase the likelihood of success, including how to turn that fear of leaving the 9-5 rat race and a steady paycheck into a burning enthusiasm that will allow you to reach for your ultimate dreams. One of the first steps is figuring out what kind of lifestyle you really want and then designing a game plan that will allow you to accomplish that dream. They suggest that we do not waste time agonizing over what we should have done, but rather have the courage to make things happen now. Another excellent point they make is that you can afford to “spend” your time in the corporate world, but as an entrepreneur you must “invest” your time in building your business. Fired Up! is a pretty quick read and has many excellent suggestions, whether you’re currently stuck in the corporate world, already dreaming of taking the leap, just getting started in your own business, or struggling to grow your business. Most of the principles are not new or earth-shattering, but they are inspiring and time tested. If you don’t read Fired Up! you better hope your competition doesn’t either.
