Size Does Matter

This month’s book review takes a look at several companies who have made conscious decisions to stay small and focus on their “mojo,” thereby proving that for some business owners, there are more important things than money.  Author Bo Burlingham’s analysis is titled “Small Giants: Companies That Choose to Be Great Instead of Big.”  The main point of this book is that it’s perfectly ok, and perhaps even admirable, for a company to make the decision to resist the pressure to grow and expand.  Unlike most best selling business books that focus on large public companies, “Small Giants” focuses on fourteen companies who clearly go against the old adage that businesses must grow or die.  The owners of these companies believe that you can’t measure the value of what a company does by simply looking at the bottom line.  Furthermore, steady growth and high profits may indicate a strong management team, but according to Burlingham, they say little about whether or not the company is actually making any real meaningful contribution to the world.  Do not get the impression that these businesses are not successful, they just define it differently.  The author concludes that the owners of these small giants focus on the relationships between their company and its employees, customers, vendors and community.  If you believe there’s more to building a business than making lots of money, give “Small Giants” a read, and you’ll realize you’re not alone.
